There is local angling information in each of the area sections but the general picture is that Argyll’s has vast resources to support sea and fresh water angling of many kinds.
These include:
- a long outer coastline on the Atlantic with sea lochs running far inland
- an inner coastline on the Clyde waterway system
- large inland lochs
- hill lochs
Argyll is arguably the top venue for skate fishing in the UK and Loch Awe is one of the best early season trout waters in Scotland.
The Rivers Awe and Orchy used to produce salmon of over 50lbs – but no more. Sea trout numbers are also in decline. But while the salmon may be smaller than before they are still running and there are plenty of sea trout.
Whether you are sea or freshwater fishing in Argyll, there are physical risks you must take into account in planning your trip.
- There are several tidal rushes, including the Corryvreckan whirlpool between the Isles of Jura and Scarba, which are a danger to small boats. Where you get wind against tide these conditions become particularly serious. In the Corryvreckan, for example, they have been seen to generate an 8m standing wave.
- The attraction of angling in hill lochs is the tranquillity resulting from their remoteness. However, you need to be both physically very fit to tramp in and out of the long miles over rough ground to access these places. And you must be equipped with basic survival and communications gear should the weather turn nasty and cut off your retreat.
