You are in: Campbeltown, Kintyre & Gigha
This is arguably
the most famous area of Argyll, thanks to Paul McCartney’s international hit song with his band "Wings" - "Mull of Kintyre".
A long peninsula, it stretches south west down into the Irish Sea, from the yachtsman’s paradise of Tarbert on Loch Fyne to Southend on the tip of The Mull itself. For more Hotels or other accommodation in the area, check our Hotel directory.
Its almost treeless west coast looks over to the Isles of Islay and Jura marked by the distinctive Paps of Jura. Its lush east coast looks across Kilbrannan Sound to the peaks of the Isle of Arran. Saddell, on this east coast, is known to have been Linda McCartney’s best-loved place and her daughter, fashion designer Stella, chose to marry there on its silver beach.
The Mull of Kintyre proper is the lump of the peninsula south of Campbeltown, with the lighthouse at Machrihanish on its north west. Its great cliffs and headlands look down the Ayrshire coast to Ailsa Craig and over to Rathlin Island and the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland.
The closeness of these areas is a reminder of the nature of the early Kingdom of Dalriada where people from Ireland - the Scotti - colonised much of Argyll with Dalriada marrying both territories. For books on Scotland and Argyll, check our online Book Store.
The area includes the little Isle of Gigha, snaking its way over the waves near the entrance to West Loch Tarbert. It also includes the tiny Isle of Sanda, south of Campbeltown, now offering the adventure of one of the most inaccessible taverns in the UK.
