Mingary Castle
When the MacIans of Ardnamurchan in around 1200 decided that they would need a castle to protect their interests in the region, the chose a small rocky outcrop right on the shore of Mingary Bay as the location. The castle was soon involved in a series of battles and conflicts, for example serving James IV in 1493 and 1495 as a base to help to suppress the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

Over the following centuries the castle saw a changeful history: Clan fights, sieges, destruction, restoration and changing owners. More detailed information on history and architecture of the castle can be found under www.highlandconnection.org/castles.

Castle Tioram
A truly impressive ruin of an ancient castle, set on the rocky cliff of a small tidal island in Loch Moidart (northern Ardnamurchan). The outer walls of the castle date back to the 13th century, the tower and the interior buildings were added between the 14th and 16th century. It has been the seat of the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald, until it was burned during the Jacobite Rising of 1715. It has been unoccupied since that time.
