There are a number of small towns and villages along its shoreline, most of which had their origins in fishing. On the east side, starting from the top end, we visit Cairndow, Artkinglas Woodland Garden, St Catherines, Strachur, Newton, the ruins of Castle Lachlan, Otter Ferry, Kilfinan and on to Portavadie where the Calmac ferry takes the traveller over to Tarbert.

From there, on the western side, we head north to Stonefield Castle, Crinan, Lochgilphead, Crarae Garden, Furnace, Auchendrain Highland Township, the Argyll Wildlife Park, then Inveraray, a set piece of Scottish Georgian architecture. And finally, we had for the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar at Cairndow.

The whole area is within easy driving distance of all Scotland and northern England. From Glasgow, head up the A82 with Loch Lomond on the right. Turn off at Tarbet, then on to Arrochar and over the Rest and Be Thankful and around to the head of Loch Fyne, with the choice of turning off on the A815 to St Catherines or travelling on to Inveraray.
